I wonder if any one has used a yoga mat on top of their bench. Concerned about such things as reaction on finish, reaction on glued joint when the parts had rested on the mat. Also reactions to products such as alcohol naptha etc. The mats seem like they may be a nice change from the matting material I now use.

Tom, I tried a yoga mat for work covers to protect the top from scratching when setting up. The one I had started leaving an impression in the nitro lacquer, luckily I caught it in time that I was able to re-level and buff out.

FWIW, different yoga mats are made of different materials because some of us prefer the feel of one over the other.

I use shelf liner mat as a bench cover when working on a "finished" instrument.
I used to use some real rubber-foam (from the sixties) carpet under-lay.
New foams are likely vinyl so check the solvents in nitro, methyl hydrate and expect trouble from acetone.
I would test it first.

I like cotton canvas for a bench top cover when working on finished or sensitive work.

I use a bathroom rug. No problems so far, but you need to wash it once to get the loose fibers out. I have also used an old bath towel.
